The National Native Addictions Partnership Foundation (NNAPF) has invited NNADAP Treatment Centre Directors and other expert guests from Manitoba and Saskatchewan to an addiction and mental health regional research consultation, to be held in Saskatoon/ Wanuskewin Heritage Park, SK, beginning the evening of October 4th and followed by a 1 and ½ day agenda October 5th & 6th. The consultation engages Saskatchewan and Manitoba NNADAP Treatment Centre Directors, as well as federal and provincial Addictions Managers, NEAHR Centres, and researchers in a joint-session, co-hosted by the Anishnawbe Kekendazone Network Environment for Aboriginal Health Research (AK-NEAHR), the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH), the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) and NNAPF (for more information, please see the communiqué).

The purpose of the consultation is to identify and build consensus concerning research gaps and topics that are currently relevant to the addiction and mental health field. The end goals are:

  • To support NNADAP in building their research capacity through partnerships with the research community; and,
  • To better inform regional research agendas of NNADAP, academia and government, in key areas that are pertinent to regional NNADAP Treatment Centres.

Attendees are invited to arrive the afternoon of Monday, October 4th for the welcoming ceremony, introductions, networking, and meal buffet at the Saskatoon Inn beginning at 5:00 p.m. A 1 and ½ day regional research consultation with a vigorous agenda of key presentations followed by strategic discussions begins Tuesday, October 5th at 9:00 am, and ends after lunch on Wednesday, October 6th. A Meetings Outcome report that builds on the research outcomes of the McGill Consultation (also available on-line), is expected to summarize next steps and action plan to roll out the knowledge shared at an upcoming national forum, to be held in Alberta/BC Region, hopefully sometime in February 2011.

Guests staying at the Saskatoon Inn (65 rooms have been reserved) will have the option of being bussed to the First Nations venue at nearby Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Travel and accommodation expenses for NNADAP Directors and all guests will be cost-shared by NNAPF, AK-NEAHR, CAMH and CCSA, and other partners.

As one of the key partners in this sector and given the strategic importance of this ‘knowledge-translation’ meeting, we are pleased if you’ll consider our invitation to participate and inform this consultation process. A gathering such as this will bring key federal, provincial, First Nations, academic participants, as well as the Manitoba and Saskatchewan NNADAP Treatment Centre Directors, as we strategically move to inform decision-makers on research priorities relative to the renewal of NNADAP.
