Tobacco Cessation Today

The Wunska Report, Youth Inquiry Into Tobacco Use, created the beginnings of the First Nations and Inuit Tobacco Control Strategy across Canada. This strategy is based on a community based approach and thus the National Advisory Circle on the First Nations and Inuit Tobacco Control Strategy was formed. This Circle provides a venue for regional representatives to bring forward their perspectives. The first task of the Circle was to develop the National First Nations and Inuit Tobacco Control Strategy Framework. The framework was approved in July 2002. The current work is based on developing a Best Practices document and guidelines for the delivery and implementation of demonstration projects in First Nations.

A number of Tobacco cessation/control strategies have been developed at International, Federal, Provincial and Territorial level. Some of these strategies are directed at the Canadian population in general, with a few for First Nations and Inuit people specifically.
